Power Quality Economic Analysis Tool

The Power Quality Solution Evaluator (PQSE) is a Microsoft^® Windows^® based program for evaluating the economics associated with power quality impacts along with the proposed solutions for improving power quality. The PQSE was developed to allow economic comparisons between different customer-side solutions to power quality problems. These economic results are presented as "Annual Costs" for the various proposed solutions compared against the base case of a "Do Nothing" scenario.

PQSE models the economic impact of voltage sags and interruptions on a customer facility. Power quality impacts are quantified in terms of magnitude, duration and the number of phases involved. This is expressed as the number of events per month. The costs associated with sags and interruptions are defined in terms of the cost for a one-minute interruption. The costs for sags of various magnitudes, durations and the number of phases involved are expressed in terms of a percentage of the interruption cost. Power quality solutions are defined in terms of cost and effectiveness. The solution costs consist of capital costs, which are financed over the study duration, and annual operational and maintenance costs.

The customer facility can be modeled as a collection of one or more processes. Power quality and the associated costs can be uniquely defined for each process or simply defined for the main customer bus. Solutions can be applied at individual processes or at the main customer bus.

How to Use the PQ Solution Evaluator

Data is entered via user interface forms and stored in a Microsoft Access database. An example database with 15 different solution technologies is provided with the program. Input data and result reports are available for printing or copying to the Windows clipboard. The software also features on-line help describing all of the program functions and operations.

A library of PQ solution cost and effectiveness data for various solution technologies is available for easy importation into the PQSE program. The data for this library is also stored in an Access database and can be edited with the companion program PQSE Solution Editor. This companion program can be launched from within PQSE or from the Windows Start Menu. A library with cost and effectiveness data for 15 different solution technologies is shipped with the PQSE program.

Annual costs are presented in both tabular and graphical format and are ordered according to increasing costs. The graphical presentation highlights both the "PQ Costs" and "Solution Costs" components associated with the total annual cost.
